What is Periodontics?
We said Periodontics is the dental speciality that treats gum related diseases.Periodontics also covers apart from the gums (gingera), the layers covering the root of the tooth (cementum), the soft tissue between the tooth root and the jaw bone holding the tooth (periodontal ligament), and the part of the jaw bone holding the tooth (alveolac bone).
Common periodontal diseases are,
- The diseases of the Gum called Gingivitis
- Conditions involving chronic and progressive degeneration periodontal ligament, cementum and the alveolac bone.
What causes the disease?
These infections are caused by bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria get accumulated in the plaque due to lack of oral hygiene. Food impaction, improper brushing techniques, faulty dental and oral appliances etc. causes infections. Habits
like thumb sucking, mouth breathing, improper food habits, smoking etc. also causes infections in the mouth. Diseases like diabetes, hypertension, mental retardation, blood disorders, hormonal imbalance in pregnancy, menopause and
puberty etc. are also known to cause periodontal diseases. Other known factors include old age, family history and malnutrition.
What are the symptoms?
This is a very slow disease and progresses with very little symptoms to begin with. Initially it might cause some bleeding from the gums and usually you are not aware of the disease until it is too late. The other symptoms which will become evident in the later stages are, bleeding gums, loose teeth, spreading of the teeth with space in between and also pain in some cases.
Periodontal diseases are curable only depending upon the progression of the disease or the stage at which you have consulted the doctor.
Which are the different stages of the disease and what are the treatment methods available?
In the initial stage one or two sittings of scaling (cleaning) and polishing with better maintenance and oral hygiene would suffice. In the second stage though you will need deep scaling of the gums called gingerial curellage which will help in healing the surrounding tissues. In the third stage or the advanced stage you will have to get surgical treatments along with the scaling and polishing to get relief. In the final stage it is the terminal stage wherein you cannot do anything but remove the teeth and get an implant done or opt for dentures as a final option.
The various periodontal surgical treatments we perform in our clinic are,
Gingivectomy: This is a surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia to treat enlarged and defective Gums.
Flap Surgery: This surgical procedure is done to clean the root of the tooth by removing a layer of the gum. This is again done under local anaesthesia.
Periodontal Bone Grafting: This procedure is done for cases where in there is severe deterioration of the alveolac bone.
Guided Tissue Regeneration: This procedure uses artificial barrier marenals to stimulate bone growth in a guided manner.
Muco Gingival Surgery: This surgery is performed to enhance the aesthetics of the mouth.
